Math Energizers ♥ Energizantes Matemáticos

¡Hola, confettis!

Cada vez que puedo, me gusta proponer a mis peques algún juego, acertijo o enigma para que se metan de lleno en la asignatura de Matemáticas y empiecen a "calentar" sus cabecitas. ¡Son geniales para hacer una pequeña pausa entre clase y clase y para captar su atención! Aquí os dejo mis 5 energizantes matemáticos favoritos:

At the beginning of each Maths session, I like to give my little ones some kind of game, riddle or puzzle for getting them to dive into the subject and starting warming-up their brains. They are great as a little brain break and for catching their attention! Here I leave my 5 favourite maths energisers:

1. El círculo / The Circle

¡Sencillo pero efectivo! Dibuja en la pizarra un círculo grande y vete escribiendo números dentro y fuera de él. Solo se tiene que cumplir una norma: los números que escriban dentro del círculo tienen que tener algo en común (ej. ser pares, terminar en 6, ser múltiplos de 7...). Tus alumn@s tendrán que adivinar cuál es la norma que cumplen todos los del círculo. Y no tienen por qué ser números sueltos, pueden ser operaciones, figuras... ¡Lo que quieras!

Simple, yet effective! Draw a big circle on your whiteboard and write numbers inside and out of it. A single rule must be followed: the numbers that are written in the circle must have something in common (e.g. be even, end in 6, be multiples of 7...). Your students will have to guess which is the rule the ones in the circle follow. And they don't need to be random numbers, they can be operations, shapes... Whatever you want!

2. ¿Cuál no encaja? / Which one doesn't belong?

La página web de Which one doesn't belong? ofrece un montón de grupos de cuatro elementos en los que l@s alumn@s tendrán que explicar cuál de ellos no encaja con los demás. No hay una única solución, la cuestión está en que l@s niñ@s reflexionen, piensen y expresen los motivos por los que creen que un determinado elemento no pertenece a ese grupo.

Categorías: formas, números, gráficos y ecuaciones y sets incompletos.

Dificultad: desde números naturales hasta ecuaciones y trigonometría.

The web page Which one doesn't belong? offers a wide variety of sets with four elements in which students will have to find a reason why each one doesn't belong. There isn't just one answer, the idea is that children have to reflect, think and express their reasons why they believe a certain element doesn't belong there.

Categories: shapes, numbers, graphs and equations and incomplete sets.

Difficulty: from natural numbers to equations and trigonometry.

Grades: all!

3. El Sol / The Sun

Este lo descubrí gracias a un curso de ABN que hicimos en el cole. Se trata de poner un número en el centro y decir todas las operaciones que nos llevarían hasta él. ¡Es perfecto para trabajar la descomposición y el cálculo mental! Y lo mejor es que sirve para todos grupos y niveles, pues la dificultad se puede adaptar fácilmente.

I discovered this game thanks to an ABN workshop I attended in my school. You have to place a number in the middle and think of all the different operations that lead us to it. It's perfect for working on decomposing and mental arithmetic! And the best thing is that it works with all groups and grades, as the difficulty level can be easily adjusted.

4. Dados / Dice

¡Jugad con dados! Mis favoritos para hacer el juego con toda la clase son los grandes de cartón o de plástico, de forma que todo el mundo vea bien lo que sale. Tiradlos y, dependiendo de lo que estéis trabajando en ese momento, podéis sumar, restar, multiplicar y dividir los números. Luego solemos inventar un problema que se pueda resolver utilizando esa operación.
TIP: ¡utiliza dados de más de 6 caras!

Play with dice! My favourite ones for playing the game with the whole class are the big carton or plastic ones, so that everyone gets to see their numbers. Throw them and, depending on what you're working on, you can add, subtract, multiply or divide the numbers. Then, we usually invent a problem that can be solved using that operation.
TIP: use dice with more than 6 faces!

5. Noggle

¡El juego preferido de mis peques! Se trata de presentarles un panel con 16 números (4x4) y decirles uno al azar. Deberán tratar de llegar a dicho número operando con los números del panel que se estén "tocando" (derecha, izquierda, arriba o abajo).

My little ones' favourite game! Present them a panel with 16 numbers (4x4) and tell them a random one. They will have to try to get to that number operating with the panel numbers that are "touching" (right, left, up or down).
